Pinyin is the official Mandarin romanization system

Jyutping is the romanization system for Cantonese
developed by the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong. Tones are indicated
by numbers 1–6 after each syllable (e.g. nei5 hou2 = hello).

Tones are critical in both Mandarin and Cantonese — Mandarin has 4 tones, Cantonese has 6–9 depending on the counting system. Use the pinyin tone marks (ā á ǎ à) and jyutping tone numbers alongside the audio clips. The characters shown are Simplified Chinese; Traditional Chinese characters are used in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
